Textbook word banks
Character games for Let's Learn Mandarin (來!學華語)
Books 1 to 6, one word bank per lesson
The new characters each lesson's vocabulary introduces in 來!學華語, compiled from the vocabulary index at the back of each OCAC textbook into word banks and connected to the games and worksheets on Boba Chinese Classroom. The series is written for adult beginners, so a teacher can project a lesson for the class to read together and then share the same lesson for students to review on their own. Once it is saved to My Portal, the same list feeds lesson planning and printed worksheets.
Compiled from the vocabulary index in the OCAC's 來!學華語 textbooks. Not published by the Overseas Community Affairs Council.

What is Character games for Let's Learn Mandarin (來!學華語)?
These character games take the new characters introduced by each lesson's vocabulary in the 來!學華語 (Let's Learn Mandarin) textbook series and connect them to the character-recognition games on Boba Chinese Classroom. The lists are compiled from the vocabulary index printed in the textbooks published by the Overseas Community Affairs Council, so teachers and students can pick a lesson in the browser and play without typing up flashcards or installing anything.
In the classroom
Before class, find this week's lesson, choose a game, and project it for students to answer in turns. Each lesson's list holds only the characters its vocabulary introduces, so characters taught in earlier lessons do not come up again. After saving the lesson to My Portal you can also run it as a Live Lesson, with students joining on their own phones or laptops.
At home
When reviewing on your own, find the lesson your class is on this week and pick a game. Every character has audio, so a tap plays how it is pronounced.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it free?
- Yes. Play in the browser at classroom.bbchinese.com with no account and nothing to install.
- Which books are covered?
- Books 1 to 6, one word bank per lesson, with lesson titles matching the textbook's table of contents.
- Where do the character lists come from?
- Each textbook ends with a vocabulary index that marks the lesson every word is taught in. We compile the characters that appear for the first time in each lesson's words into that lesson's word bank, leaving out the ones earlier lessons already taught.
- Do the games suit adult learners?
- Yes. The games were first designed for children, so the visuals are playful, but what they practise is reading characters and matching them to sound, which works at any age.
- Is this the same series as 學華語向前走?
- No. Both series are published by the OCAC, but 學華語向前走 is written for children and 來!學華語 for adult beginners, and each has its own word bank page.
- Can I use Simplified characters?
- Yes. Switch the script in the page settings and the word banks and games follow.
- Is this affiliated with the OCAC?
- No. The word banks are compiled from the vocabulary index printed in the textbooks and are not published by the Overseas Community Affairs Council.
